Scindia Ghat, Varanasi

A partially submerged Shiva temple leans at a distinct, sharp angle into the Ganges at Scindia Ghat. The heavy stone structure began to sink into the riverbed shortly after its construction in the middle of the nineteenth century. Its weight proved too much for the soft silt, dragging the lower floors deep into the mud. Pilgrims and locals eventually abandoned the lower levels to the rising water, leaving only the upper entrance reachable for those brave enough to navigate the tilt.
