The King David Hotel rises above the Hinnom Valley with a facade of pink limestone quarried in Hebron. Ezra Mosseri, an Egyptian banker, commissioned the hotel in the late nineteen twenties to provide a luxury destination for travelers in Mandatory Palestine. In July nineteen forty-six, members of the Irgun paramilitary group detonated explosives in the basement, destroying the southern wing. The blast killed ninety-one people, including British officials, hotel staff, and passersby, forever changing the building into a fortress of security.
