Akash Bhairab Temple

The three-story pagoda of the Akash Bhairab Temple sits right on the main thoroughfare of Indrachowk, distinguished by its gilded roof and the rows of heavy, carved wooden struts that support the eaves. The building honors a fierce manifestation of Shiva, the god of the sky. Legend says the king of the gods once walked the earth in human form to witness a battle, only to be beheaded. His severed head remains here, represented by the silver mask that devotees worship inside.
