The central feature of Indra Chowk is the Akash Bhairab temple, a three-story pagoda distinguished by its large, gilded copper mask of the deity. Since at least the fifteenth century, this junction served as a critical node on the ancient trade route connecting Tibet and India. During the annual Indra Jatra festival, dancers wearing elaborate masks perform here, honoring the rain god. The mask of Akash Bhairab is brought out into the open only once a year, drawing immense crowds to this stone-paved square.
