Myechyo Hiti

Myechyo Hiti is a sunken stone water spout tucked into a rectangular courtyard. Carved into the wall above the basin, a stone makara—a mythical sea creature—pours water from its mouth into the pool below. Residents of Kathmandu have relied on these traditional hitis for centuries, as they tap into hidden underground channels to provide a constant flow of fresh water. A local legend claims that the water here once stopped flowing until a king performed a specific ritual to appease the gods.
