The brick courtyard of Itum Bahal contains a life-sized statue of a golden peacock perched atop a stone pillar. This is the oldest surviving courtyard of its kind in Kathmandu, dating back to the twelfth century. A local legend tells of a monk who once captured a demon here, binding the spirit to the site by promising it daily offerings. Even today, residents leave small portions of food in the dark corners of the courtyard to satisfy that lingering, ancient debt.
