Maru Hiti is a sunken stone water spout tucked below street level in the heart of Kathmandu. It feeds from a subterranean aquifer, continuously pouring cool water through a carved stone waterspout shaped like a makara, a mythical sea creature. For centuries, this stone basin served as the primary water source for local residents, functioning as a daily communal hub. The Malla kings commissioned such hitis to ensure public access to water, and today the basin remains active, perpetually collecting groundwater.
