Shree Gha Vihar

The square, golden roof of Shree Gha Vihar rises above the surrounding courtyards of Kathmandu. This Buddhist monastery, also known as Kathesimbu Stupa, serves as a smaller replica of the massive Swayambhunath complex. Construction began in the mid-seventeenth century when pilgrims sought a local alternative for those unable to make the long, steep climb to the hilltop temple. A merchant named Lakhya established the site, hoping to bring the spiritual atmosphere of the great shrine into the heart of the city.
