Entrepotdok

The Entrepotdok consists of a long, continuous row of nineteenth-century warehouses lining the waterfront with distinctive stepped gables. It was built between eighteen twenty-seven and eighteen forty as a tax-free zone, allowing merchants to store goods like coffee, tea, and tobacco without paying duties until the cargo was sold and shipped out. In the nineteen eighties, the city converted these deep, dark storage spaces into apartments, preserving the sturdy brick facades that once kept the city's trade goods secure from the elements.
