The Atlas Beer Cafe is defined by the heavy, rough-hewn stone walls and the glass frontage that opens directly onto the edge of Lake Wakatipu. It occupies the former site of the town's original stone wharf buildings, built during the gold rush era to service the steamers navigating the lake. Proprietors once stored crates of supplies here, just feet from the water. Today, the bar maintains a long, narrow layout, retaining the stone masonry from the eighteen hundreds inside.
