Steamer Wharf

The red corrugated iron roofs and timber piles stretching into Lake Wakatipu define Steamer Wharf. This site functioned as the primary industrial gateway for the gold mining era, where steamships hauled machinery, livestock, and miners into the interior. In eighteen seventy-eight, the arrival of the Earnslaw turned this pier into a hub for trade. When gold faded, the wharf avoided demolition by shifting its purpose toward tourism. Today, timber decking connects a line of restaurants to the water where historic vessels still dock.
