Eichardt's Private Hotel sits on the Queenstown waterfront with a distinctive cream-colored facade and ornate wrought-iron balconies. William Gilbert Rees originally built a small wool shed here in eighteen sixty-three during the height of the gold rush. Shortly after, Albert Eichardt purchased the site and expanded the structure into a luxury hotel for miners and travelers. He once famously accepted a large gold nugget as payment for a week's stay, keeping it on display behind the bar for decades.
