Albert Eichardt arrived in Queenstown during the nineteen sixties gold rush and took over the existing Victoria Hotel, renaming it after himself. When he discovered a traveler named William Rees had lost his sheep station in a poker game, Eichardt bought the property and transformed it into a luxury lodge. He kept the bar as a rough, reliable spot for miners and gentlemen alike.
