Monument to the Ghetto Heroes

The Monument to the Ghetto Heroes features a massive, vertical stone slab facing the square, carved with a relief of fighters marching into battle. On the other side, a bronze sculpture depicts a group of figures huddled together in flames. Nathan Rapoport designed these two faces to contrast the defiance of the nineteen forty-three uprising with the suffering of the civilians trapped inside the ghetto. The granite for the monument was originally ordered by the Nazis for a planned victory memorial that they never built.
