The Gerberngasse is marked by the narrow, timber-framed houses that lean over the cobblestones. Tanners once occupied this alley, using the water from the nearby Aare River to process animal hides. In the eighteenth century, the chemical stench of the tanneries defined the street. The residents organized their homes to keep the living quarters on the upper floors while the work took place in the damp ground levels. A major fire in the year seventeen seventy-one destroyed much of this district.
