The Mühlenplatz sits at the edge of the Aare River, marked by a stone basin where the water flows from a single iron pipe. In the nineteenth century, the square served as the heart of Bern's industrial activity. Dozens of watermills once crowded this bank, their wheels turned by the river to grind grain and power workshops. A massive fire destroyed many of these wooden structures in eighteen twenty-four, leaving behind the open, paved space that remains today.
