The building on Rathausgasse stands out because of the colorful, mural-covered facade that breaks the uniform stone aesthetic of the Bernese old town. This house serves as a self-managed center for art and culture, housing a variety of studios, event spaces, and a public cafe. In the nineteen eighties, the building became a site of intense local struggle when squatters took it over to prevent it from being converted into luxury offices. The city eventually recognized the group, leading to the current arrangement.
