The Matte-Plattform elevator is a steel and glass shaft pinned directly against the sandstone cliff separating the upper city from the riverside Matte district. Before it opened in nineteen seventy-four, residents relied on a steep, narrow lane known as the Schifflaube to climb back home. A local committee spent years lobbying for this shortcut to solve the isolation of the neighborhood. The lift carries passengers through the solid rock face, emerging high above the Aare River near the cathedral terrace.
