The façade of number one Royal Crescent consists of a uniform, sweeping curve of honey-colored Bath stone featuring thirty Ionic columns. Built between seventeen sixty-seven and seventeen seventy-five, this townhouse served as a luxury lodging for wealthy visitors coming to the city for the spa waters. John Wood the Younger designed the entire crescent to look like a single palace. Elizabeth Montagu, a prominent social leader of the eighteenth century, famously stayed here to host lavish card parties for the fashionable elite.
