Three curved crescents of honey-colored Bath stone form a perfect circle, enclosing a patch of grass so green it looks painted. John Wood the Elder designed this in seventeen fifty-four, basing the dimensions on the Roman Colosseum. He flipped the design inside out, placing the columns on the exterior facade instead of the interior. Each level uses a different classical order, stacking Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns as the eye travels upward toward the roofline where stone acorns sit perched in a row.
