The Pump Room is identifiable by the tall, Corinthian columns lining its entrance and the steady stream of visitors stepping into its high-ceilinged hall. Built in the late eighteenth century, it allowed wealthy bathers to socialize while drinking mineral-rich thermal water pumped directly from the Roman springs below. Jane Austen set scenes for her novels here, watching the social hierarchy unfold over glasses of tepid water. The original pump handle remains on the counter, still connected to the source of the city’s fame.
