Anti-Slavery International

Anti-Slavery International began its life in eighteen thirty-nine as the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society. Thomas Clarkson, a key architect of the movement to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire, addressed the inaugural meeting of the organization to demand the end of slavery everywhere. This office serves as the headquarters for the world's oldest international human rights organization. Its staff coordinates global campaigns against forced labor and debt bondage from this location in Kennington. They continue the work started by those nineteenth century activists who first realized that ending the legal status of slavery required a permanent international body to monitor its persistence.
