Cutting Room Square

Cutting Room Square sits at the heart of Ancoats, marked by a massive, rusted steel sculpture that resembles a giant, jagged jigsaw puzzle. It stands on the former site of the Murrays Mills complex, where workers once processed raw cotton into thread around the clock. In the eighteen hundreds, this area fueled the global textile trade. The square gets its name from the cutting room that occupied this precise spot, where blades sliced finished fabric before it was packed and shipped to ports worldwide.
