Albert Memorial

The Albert Memorial in Albert Square features a sandstone canopy sheltering a statue of Prince Albert. Queen Victoria herself chose the design to honor her husband, tasking sculptor Matthew Noble with the likeness. When it was unveiled in eighteen sixty-seven, the memorial served as the city's primary tribute to the Prince Consort. Its ornate Gothic spire mirrors the elaborate style of the neighboring town hall, creating a unified look for the square that has defined this part of the city for over a century.
