Castlefield Bowl is a sunken, open-air arena carved directly into the basin of the old Bridgewater Canal. It features a tiered grass amphitheater that drops down toward a permanent stage set against the brickwork of the Victorian railway viaducts. Before it became a concert venue, this space sat derelict for years as the industrial city shifted away from canal transport. In nineteen ninety-six, the city transformed this empty industrial pit into a stage for the inaugural Manchester International Festival's opening concert.
