Britons Protection

The Britons Protection stands out with its curved, dark-tiled corner facade, squeezed onto the edge of a busy street. It takes its name from an old friendly society that met here to help soldiers returning from the Napoleonic Wars. Inside, the walls hold a famous painting of the Peterloo Massacre, showing cavalry charging into a peaceful reform meeting in eighteen nineteen. The pub kept that image even when the city tried to bury the memory of that day for nearly two centuries.
