Abraham Lincoln Statue

The bronze Abraham Lincoln sits in a chair, his head bowed as if reading a document. This statue arrived in Manchester in nineteen eighty-six, a gift from the people of Cincinnati. It commemorates the letters sent by Manchester cotton workers to the American president during the eighteen sixties. Despite facing widespread unemployment when the Union blockade cut off raw cotton supplies, the workers supported Lincoln and his fight against slavery. The statue stands as a direct response to that historical moment of international solidarity.
