National Trust - Castlefield Viaduct

The Castlefield Viaduct is a massive steel railway bridge stretching across the heart of Manchester, characterized by its grid of heavy iron girders and tracks that have been overgrown with wild plants. Originally constructed in eighteen ninety-two for the Great Northern Railway, it hauled heavy goods into the city for decades. In the nineteen sixties, a train engineer named John Raftery allegedly drove the final locomotive across the structure before it was closed and left to gather rust, eventually becoming an elevated garden.
