Manchester Crown Court (Minshull St)

The red brick facade of Manchester Crown Court on Minshull Street features a clock tower that dominates the corner, topped by a distinctive stone lantern. Opened in eighteen seventy-one, the building began as the medico-legal center of the city. Architect Thomas Worthington designed the structure to house the police courts and the fire station, with holding cells tucked into the basement. In eighteen ninety-six, a prisoner named Ernest Gaukroger escaped by squeezing through a ventilation duct, leading the authorities to install iron bars.
