Hallé at St Michael's

The Hallé at Saint Michael’s stands out with its jagged, sharp-angled roofline that cuts against the brickwork of the old church. This former place of worship served a neighborhood built for mill workers in the eighteen hundreds. After decades of sitting empty, the orchestra turned the derelict shell into their permanent rehearsal home. They kept the stained glass and the original Victorian stonework while slotting a modern acoustic box inside. The conductor Mark Elder once described the space as having a soul.
