The Kimpton Clocktower Hotel occupies the former Refuge Assurance Company headquarters. Its most striking feature is the two hundred and seventeen foot clock tower that terminates in a terra-cotta crown. When the building opened in eighteen ninety-five, it functioned as a grand office space for a booming insurance firm. Architects Wilson and Oldham chose an exuberant Baroque style to impress potential policyholders with the company’s permanence. The clock face once featured the letters of the firm’s name instead of traditional numerals.
