Free Trade Hall

The Free Trade Hall bears a heavy stone facade, punctuated by twelve grand, arched windows that face Peter Street. Built in eighteen fifty-six, it occupies the site of the Peterloo Massacre, where cavalry charged a peaceful protest for parliamentary reform decades earlier. Architect Edward Walters designed the hall to champion the repeal of the Corn Laws, and it became a center for radical politics, eventually hosting legends like Winston Churchill and Bob Dylan, who famously shouted Judas from the stage in nineteen sixty-six.
