Friargate Quaker Meeting House

The Friargate Quaker Meeting House features a modest, red brick exterior tucked behind a high wall on a narrow street in York. Built in eighteen thirteen, it replaced an earlier structure that had served the city's Quakers since the late seventeenth century. During the nineteenth century, the building provided a rare sanctuary for local dissenters who refused to swear oaths or pay tithes to the Church of England. Margaret Fell, a founder of the movement, held meetings in York despite facing repeated imprisonment.
