York Roman Bath Museum

The York Roman Bath Museum sits beneath the Golden Fleece Inn, anchored by thick, gritstone walls that were once part of a heated room for soldiers. These ruins remain hidden beneath the floorboards of the public house, where legionaries of the Ninth Legion discarded broken pottery and coins nearly two thousand years ago. Excavators found the original stone pilae—the stacks of tiles that held up the floor—still standing in place, supporting the weight of the drinkers who frequent the pub above.
