St Crux

The brick wall on Pavement is the only part of Saint Crux that remains. It holds a single, arched doorway that once served a church mentioned in the Domesday Book. The original building suffered from soft soil and centuries of decay, leading the city to tear it down in eighteen eighty-seven. Today, that lonely facade stays tucked into the street line, preserving the memory of the parishoners who buried their dead beneath the very ground where modern shoppers walk past every day.
