Church of St Martin le Grand

The Church of St Martin le Grand features a large, sixteenth-century clock projecting over the street, with a small wooden figure known as the Little Admiral standing guard above the dial. This church served the city of York for centuries before a German air raid in nineteen forty-two gutted the interior with incendiary bombs. Following the destruction, the city chose to keep the remaining walls and the clock, leaving the site as an open-air memorial rather than rebuilding the sanctuary.
