Bedern Hall

The stone walls of Bedern Hall hold the remnants of a fourteenth-century dining room built for the vicars choral of York Minster. These men lived communally, eating meals together under a massive timber roof that still spans the space today. In eighteen forty-eight, a local builder bought the hall and turned it into a glass factory, even cutting a new window through the masonry to vent his furnaces. The soot from those fires stained the medieval stonework for over a century.
