JORVIK Viking Centre

A low, modern concrete building sits on the corner of Coppergate, distinguished by a circular entrance that cuts into the street corner. Beneath these floors lie the timber remains of a tenth century Viking settlement, perfectly preserved in waterlogged soil. During the late nineteen seventies, archaeologists found thousands of artifacts here, ranging from leather shoes to combs. A woman named Christine Parker discovered a unique Viking-age helmet during the excavation, and the city built this center to house the findings in their original location.
