Bootham Bar

Bootham Bar stands out as a narrow, stone archway spanning the street, topped by a battlemented tower that has guarded this entry to York for centuries. While the current structure dates largely to the fourteenth century, its foundations sit directly over the Roman gatehouse that once welcomed travelers into the legionary fortress of Eboracum. During the nineteenth century, a mob once trapped a bull inside the gate, forcing the animal to be slaughtered right there on the cobblestones to clear the way.
