St Mary's Church

The tower of Saint Mary Bishophill Junior carries a distinctive triangular pattern of stonework near its top, known as long-and-short work. This Anglo-Saxon technique dates the core of the structure to well before the Norman Conquest. While the main body of the church saw major reconstruction in the nineteenth century, the tower remains a stubborn survivor of York's earliest stone architecture. It still holds a bell cast in the fourteenth century, which local blacksmiths once repaired using scrap iron from the street below.
