Roman column in Minster Yard

The fluted column standing in Minster Yard is a single survivor of the Roman legionary fortress once built on this site. It was dug up in the late nineteen sixties, and the city decided to set it back upright near the south transept of the Minster. Most of the original Roman stones here were repurposed into the walls of the cathedral itself, but this piece was left whole. It marks the spot where the headquarters building of Eboracum once anchored the entire settlement.
