The King's Manor is recognizable by the cluster of Tudor brickwork and stone mullioned windows that seem to hold their breath within the center of York. It began as the Abbot’s house for Saint Mary’s Abbey before Henry the Eighth seized the property during the dissolution of the monasteries. It became the administrative headquarters for the Council of the North. When the King traveled north to assert his authority, he stayed here, turning the home of a monk into a residence for royal power.
