York Minster

The central tower of York Minster rises two hundred feet above the city, capped by a crown of stone pinnacles that distinguish it from every other building on the skyline. This is the seat of the Archbishop of York, built on the site of a wooden chapel where King Edwin of Northumbria was baptized in the year six hundred twenty-seven. During the building of the current Gothic structure, the master mason William Hoton spent thirty years carefully refining the tower's soaring, light-filled geometry.
