Multangular Tower

The Multangular Tower stands as a ten-sided stone bastion along the Roman walls of York. Its base consists of Roman gritstone blocks arranged in thin, alternating courses, topped by later medieval masonry. When the Emperor Septimius Severus ruled from York in the early third century, this tower guarded the western corner of the legionary fortress. One afternoon in the nineteen seventies, archaeologists found a Roman woman’s skeleton buried beneath the floorboards, still wearing ivory bracelets and glass beads from her life here.
