The Grand Assembly Rooms

The Grand Assembly Rooms feature a long, neoclassical facade with a series of massive Corinthian columns that rise directly from the pavement. Designed by Lord Burlington in seventeen thirty, this building served as the social heart of eighteenth-century York, where the local elite gathered for balls, concerts, and gambling. During the winter season, ladies and gentlemen dressed in their finest silks danced beneath chandeliers in the Egyptian Hall, a room inspired by the sketches of the Roman architect Palladio.
