National Trust - Treasurer's House, York

The Treasurer's House in York sits on a foundation of layers, with a Roman road running directly beneath its cellars. The current facade, built in the seventeenth century, masks a much older structure once occupied by the man responsible for the York Minster treasury. Frank Green, a wealthy industrialist, bought the house in the eighteen nineties. He spent years stripping away partitions to reveal medieval walls, eventually donating the entire property and his collection of antiques to the National Trust in nineteen thirty.
