St Denys's Church, York

The tower of Saint Denys sits unfinished, cut off abruptly halfway up where the medieval stone gives way to a smaller, brick crown added in the eighteen forties. This church began as a much larger building, but the eastern end fell into the River Foss after a series of floods. In thirteen ninety-three, the Earl of Northumberland gave the parish the gift of a stained glass window, but the church still struggled against the shifting, marshy soil that eventually claimed its nave.
