Abbey Strand

other

Abbey Strand is a short, cobbled street that leads directly toward the gatehouse of Holyrood Palace. For centuries, this pavement marked the boundary of a protected sanctuary. Debtors fleeing their creditors crossed into this area to gain legal immunity from arrest. They lived in cramped, improvised lodging houses along this narrow stretch, often unable to venture beyond the line of the sanctuary without risking immediate imprisonment. The stone edge where the protection began was a literal life line for hundreds of desperate people.
