Ocean/Junipero Serra Park

park garden

The long, narrow strip of green grass separating the two sides of Ocean Avenue sits on a path once carved by a streetcar line. The tracks moved to the center of the street in the early twentieth century, leaving this grassy median behind as a buffer for the neighborhood. In the nineteen fifties, local residents transformed the neglected dirt into a formal park, planting rows of trees that now shadow the benches where commuters wait for the train to pass by.
