The Arlington Theatre features a prominent, Spanish Colonial Revival bell tower that rises above State Street like a piece of old Spain dropped into California. Built in nineteen thirty-one on the site of a former hotel, it functions as a movie palace and performing arts venue. During its opening, the theater famously simulated an outdoor courtyard inside the auditorium, complete with twinkling stars on the ceiling and houses built along the walls. It remains the largest indoor movie house in Santa Barbara.
